im not sure about all of them, but #1 means to look for the bad part of something that also has something good to it.
#2 mean to be there for anyone to take, or to change.
1. the bad parts of something
2. all smoke and mirrors means illusion (like a magician)
3. up for grabs means that it’s anyones game.
1. The phrase “Every cloud has a silver lining” means that something good can be found in bad situations. So this phrase would likely mean that the person looks for the bad in good situations.
2. “Smoke and mirrors” means the person says or does things in a confusing way so that you are not able to figure out what is really going on. It usually means that they are trying to hide the truth.
3. “Up for grabs” means available to anyone, but in this particular sentence, I think it means that security was unstable.
Hopefully this is helpful.
1. It means to tell people what they perhaps don’t want to know, but exists anyway.
2. It refers to magic. In magic tricks, smoke and mirrors are used to deceive people. Therefore, it is talking about deception and tricks.
3. Available for anyone.
The writer is changing some commonly used phrases for dramatic effect.
1. The original phrase is “every cloud has a silver lining.” It means that even when bad things happen (like storms), something good can also come from it. The author in this sentence doesn’t want to spoil the happy thing by talking too much about the bad thing.
2. Magicians often use “smoke and mirrors” to distract the audience from the real part of the magic tricks. A puff of smoke and a flashing mirror can hide the fact that he is moving the item to another location instead of making it really “disappear.” It refers to anything that is designed to distract someone from what is really going on.
3. If something is “up for grabs,” that means that anyone who can take it is permitted to keep it. It’s like offering the last slice of cake at a party – the first person to “grab” it or ask for it gets to eat it.
hope that helped.
up for grabs means it is unknown what the turn out will be, security could be good or bad depending on the us policies
It’s OK, you’ve encountered some English cliches and idioms.
1. To say that EVERY CLOUD HAS A SILVER LINING means that a person is optimistic, or sees the good in everything, including bad situations. The speaker of the sentence is saying that he is pessimistic, a lot, but he doesn’t want to be for your sake.
2. To say that something is ALL SMOKE AND MIRRORS means that something is being used as a method of deception, or trickery. The speaker is saying that he won’t say that aid for education in Afghanistan is false, or a trick, but that it could have been done better.
3. If you are able to grab something, it means that the object is in reach, therefore attainable. To say something is UP FOR GRABS means that everyone has an equal chance to obtain something.
Hope this helps!
