Pharmaceutical Research and Development (R&D) – Increasing Efficiency Through Information Technology and Externalization

While

R & D (Research and Development) was always one has an integral and vital function of the pharmaceutical industry, its productivity declines, goes between the main actors thrown in the industry. One of the simplest, but most importantly, indicators of declining return on investment (ROI), the growing gap between the R & D expenditure and the number of new drug approvals, especially since 1996. If the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), 53 new active substances (New Molecular Entities) in 1996 allowed the R & D expenditure by industry stood at about $ 21. € 9 billion. However, the NME agreement reached its low point reached in just six years ago with only 17 NME approvals than R & D spending nearly doubled to $ 42. 3 billion €. R & D spending is growing steadily, but that is not reflected in the number of new drug approvals. As a start the cost of the new drug has risen to astronomical heights. Although it costs less then one billion ($ 842m) to a drug in 1999 to start, using the costs were as high as $ 3. EUR 5 billion in 2007. In addition, the negative pressure on the pricing and reimbursement suffering of the pharmaceutical companies, the high revenue from new drugs to try to create. used by the major blockbuster drugs in the industry, to expire in the next five years and a clear lack of potential blockbuster in the current pipeline, the pharmaceutical industry experts from the industry for ways to reduce risks and improve their return on investment on R & D expenditure are looking for. ID = Pharma-Research-and-Development-RD-increas-Efficiency-through-Information-Technology-and-externalization & ReportType Industry_Report = core & industry = & title = ALL Pharmaceuticals_and_Healthcare So far the industry has

a series of measures to the challenge of declining R & D address productivity, but nothing substantial has taken out as a result. One of the most comprehensive measures acquisitions of small pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies with specialized R & D capabilities and promising candidates have been the acquirer’s interest. In addition, the pharmaceutical industry considerable consolidation, with some of the largest mergers of the decade, such as Pfizer, Wyeth, Genentech, Roche and Merck-Schering-Plough experienced. Pharmaceutical companies also underwent a significant restructuring of its R & D processes in order to its focus on key strategic therapeutic areas, while the sale of new non-core business focus. Other measures include outsourcing clinical and preclinical research to CROs (Contract Research Organizations) and better life cycle management of existing drugs.

but so far none of the measures, the desired results are generated as an R & D productivity remains a concern for the pharmaceutical companies. Critics see mergers and acquisitions as a quick-fix solution, no evidence of long-term benefits in terms of R & D output and improved ROI on R & D costs. On the other hand, has R & D restructuring pace recently No results show won. While the outsourcing of R & D to CROs and drug research companies in emerging markets offers cost advantages, the advantage is partly offset by the increase in default rates. Other solutions, such as lifecycle management have their own limitations in terms of safeguarding the company against the declining sales R & D productivity. Thus, none of the solutions that previously could effectively address the challenge of declining R & D productivity.

GBI Research, the leading business intelligence provider, has its latest research on pharmaceutical research and development (R & D) – Increased efficiency through information and telecommunications technology and outsourcing, “the most important data, information and analysis on the major pharmaceutical R & offers released, D practices are undertaken on a global level, to improve efficiency and effectiveness. It analyzes the main measures and practices (mergers and acquisitions, R & D restructuring, outsourcing and active Lifecycle Management), by the pharmaceutical industry to address these challenges and improve the R & D efficiency. The report confirms the analysis with several case studies to examine the impact of the measures study after implementation.
